Home Improvement: Kitchen

Welcome to my kitchen! Once again I cannot take credit for the colors, or the checked border in the eating area, but I can take credit for picking out an awesome house! The previous owners had a retro kitchen, so the black-and-white checks don't necessarily go with our southwestern furniture, but replacing the tile is pretty far off my radar at this point.

I really like having an eat-in kitchen. I find I'm watching far less TV than I did in our old house, and doing more reading and listening to music while I cook.

Pretty much my favorite things are the license plates on the wall. (The blank spot is for Jason's New Mexico plate, once he gets his car registered in Maryland.) I'm also working on some paintings for the red wall, but I kind of suck at painting, so we'll see how that works out.

We're also shopping for a new flat-top stove and something to put the microwave on. Ideally, it would be nice to have something that would provide more counter space, but finding the perfect piece of furniture is ridiculously hard.

Oh, and new countertops, too. These ones are white laminate, and I don't know who picked those out, but they're pretty much the worst color possible. They're covered in stains and cuts. I don't know what's up with that black dishwasher either. I'm kind of hoping it breaks so I can buy a white one. And finally, we need to devise some sort of shelving system for the pantry. Now, the shelves only extend halfway into the available space, and there is a trash can and recycling bin shoved in there as well. The cut-out in the wall is great for puppet shows and drive-through orders, though.

I love the colors! And I really, really love the license plates. :)

I'd like a decaf mocha, no whip, please. Regular milk is fine.

The Zia painting is perfect on that yellow wall. You chose a beautiful house! Always always there are things to be changed and improved (like the white countertop that probably seemed like a good idea at the time). So fun that you're giving us a virtual tour.

Love your kitchen! The colors work so well with your decor. I wonder if you could paint the white tiles turquoise or something; make them more "you" without tearing them down.

Our last apartment had a cut-out from the kitchen to the living room, and I bought Jason a little bell like at a restaurant. He'd put the dishes there with food on them and ding the bell, yelling, "Order up!" It brought him endless joy.

I like the kitchen! Good colors.

When you guys play drive thru, do you pretend it is Wendy's or McDonalds??

Does this mean I have to give you my plates when I'm done with them?

Love it! How lucky to have such perfect colors already! My tip of the day (coming from someone that has had white laminate countertops twice (not by choice).....Mr. Clean Magic Eraser removes stains fabulously. It even worked on old icky stains that were there prior to us moving in. Give it a whirl.......

Ooo. Yes Amy M is right that Magic Eraser is fabulous. Also, have you tried soft scrub with bleach? I always have good luck with that too.

I really like your kitchen. It is so welcoming and warm. The license plates are a nice addition as they play well with both retro and southwestern styles. The curtain over your pantry is a great idea! I was thinking about taking the doors off of our kid's closets and replacing them with curtains.

Scope out a microwave that can be installed over your stove top and has the venting built into the bottom of the micro. We have one and it really helps out since we have next to nothing in the counter space department. Love the southwestern look you've got going. We used to live in Albuquerque and Santa Fe and I lived in Las Cruces/White Sands as a little girl. We've been in the midwest so long that I'm always slapped up the side of the head by how much I love the southwest when we do get to go back for visits. Enjoy the process of making your home your own. Stacey
